Rix Island Wear is the latest creation by Rick Ralston, the founder of Crazy Shirts, Inc.
With $60 in his pocket and a one-way ticket, Rick left Los Angeles in 1962 for a summer in Hawaii; he hasn’t looked back since.
On the beach at Waikiki, Rick hand painted T shirts using an airbrush and his imagination. In 1964, he opened the world’s first T-shirt store, which eventually grew to include 65 stores in both the islands and the mainland. After selling Crazy Shirts in 2000, Rick enjoyed retirement for several years, but he longed to put his creative talents to use again.
Inspiration came when shopping for Aloha shirts. He was disappointed with the selection he found, so in 2009, at age 69, Rick started over by creating his own line of Aloha shirts. His designs are a fresh alternative with a bold masculine look, proving to be popular with both kama’anina and visitors..
The shirts are all cotton, sewn in Hawaii, and locally created. Production quantities of Rix exclusive prints are small and often sell out quickly.
The popularity of the Rix Aloha shirts brought demand for women’s and boys’ wear which were added in 2015, the same year Rick also created a line of imprinted T-shirts selling under the Rix brand.
When Rick is not working on the shirt business, he tends to his farm in Palolo Valley where flowers grow abundantly.
